Remembrance Day

As Cadets and citizens of Canada we have great respect for those who have sacrificed so much.  Unfortunately this year due to Covid safety concerns and restrictions, no cadet is permitted to wear their uniform or take part in ANY Remembrance Day services, while so identified as a cadet.  This is to protect the health of you and those around you.
I encourage every member of 294 Chatham Kent RCACS to still continue your annual act of personal remembrance in you homes and in your hearts.

Please keep yourselves, your families and your community safe.

'At the going down of the sun and in the morning; We will remember them'

Lest we Forget

294 SQN Cadet(s) and Parents

Re: Return to Training

The staff of 294 Squadron are currently preparing for our return to training in this COVID environment.  We have been provided directives from our chain of command regarding safety and are eagerly trying to meet those demands.  Our tentative goal is to return to training (hopefully face to face; but virtually if necessary) by 05 Oct 2020.  With that said we will not jeopardize safety to meet this deadline.  We are reviewing safety policies and practices and seeking approval from the chain of command.  We will advise everyone as soon as we have approval to begin training.

Thank you for your understanding

Virtual Summer Training

Good Afternoon

I hope all are doing well. I hope you are enjoying this hot summer now that you are officially done school for the year.

There are a couple of things going on in the cadet world that I would like to make everyone aware of, cadets have the opportunity to further develop both personal and cadet skills in a new, virtual setting.

Cadets will have the opportunities to participate in flexible, voluntary training opportunities either independently at their own pace or in facilitated sessions. This summer will be about engagement and flexibility while continuing to focus on the cadet experience.
5-weeks of summer training activities
Cadets will be able to take five weeks of distance learning activities during the summer, for about two to three hours per week. The choice of the 22 activities is the same as those offered on the "Cadet Activities" portal on the Extranet and posted on the Cadet Learning / Apprentissage des cadets Facebook page, and detailed in the Virtual CTC course Schedule.  This schedule can also be found on the Ontario cadets Facebook page, a link to this page can be found at the bottom of this post or as an attachment to the email.

Please register as soon as possible.

Registration for these activities will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. In order for cadets to register for these activities, Cadets will need to send an email to their Regional Cadet Support Unit (RCSU) with the following information:

  • Last Name
  • First Name
  • Corps / Squadron Number
  • Corps / Squadron element
  • Name of the activity you wish to register for.
  • Dates of serial you wish to register for.
  • The language you would like the activity delivered in;
  • Phone number (will be used as a second-factor authentication for your online account)
  • An email address that the cadet has access to; and
  • Instrument selection for cadets registering for the music course
Email the above information to RCSU Central (Ontario, except the Ottawa Valley) RCSUCentral@Cadets.gc.ca

Cadets’ email must be sent from their personal email address or an email that they can access.  A parent email, that the cadet cannot access, should not be used.

Additional Tools and Resources
Here are the new resources and tools available to take advantage of these new opportunities:

Extranet portal - Cadet Activities
You will find here a list of activities to suggest to your cadets grouped under several themes: healthy living, financial awareness, construction activities, citizenship, cyber & media awareness and Do-It-Yourself activities (DIY).  These are all individual activities and are self-paced.

Extranet portal - Leading Activities
This portal is intended for staff cadets and offers leadership and teaching development activities.

Extranet Portal - CIC/COATS Activities
This portal is intended for COATS members and civilian instructors. Here you will find planning tools, activities and readings for continuing education. Members are invited to make suggestions for additions to this section.

Facebook Page - Cadet Learning / Cadet Learning
This Facebook page is designed to share the latest news on the activities available on extranet and maximize participation. On this page, surveys are also posted online to find out what cadets think about their favourite activities. This page is bilingual.

Throughout the summer, the page will follow cadet summer training as a CTC page would.

The National Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers Support Group takes pride in delivering high-quality training and experiences where youth lead youth, and this summer is no different –staff cadets and adult leaders selected for summer training will continue to work at delivering unique and challenging online experiences for our Cadets, in a new virtual environment. These same staff will be responsible for facilitating and following up with cadets during their training.

I hope that some of you will take advantage of these learning opportunities over this summer. If you have any questions please let me know

Sincerely

Chris Russell

Trivia Challenge

Find a partner and submit your names for a chance to represent 294 Sqn in a Zone Trivia Challenge. We are allowed 2 teams of 2 of any rank. We will up the teams in a hat and pull so it is fair. Submit your names by emailing 294chathamkent@gmail.com before 3pm Thursday 4 June 2020 to be entered.

The first day of Trivia begins on 10 June 2020 at 19:00hrs. More info below.

1ST SWOA COVID-19 Trivia Challenge

Concept: We will be hosting a webX trivia challenge. The trivia challenge will be conducted in 2 phases. Phase 1 will be completed by zone consecutively over 4 days. Phase 2 will be completed the following Monday with the winner’s from each zone going head to head until a champion is selected.

Questions: The questions will be from the following categories: Cadet History, Cadet General Knowledge, Junior Canadian Ranger History, Junior Canadian Ranger General Knowledge, Canadian Forces History and Canadian Forces General Knowledge. Note: The answers will be based on the most current information available.

Execution: WO Milloy will be the only person reading the questions. WO Steinmar will be the time keeper and Sgt Arpin will be the score keeper. If there is a discrepancy in the question or answer, the challenge will stop and the 3 TSC’s will confer and come up with a decision which will be final. If a question is answered incorrectly, the correct answer will not be given. This is to ensure fairness for all of the participants. If you would like the answer to any questions after the challenge is completed, we will provide them through your chain of command in your Corps/Sqn.

Rules: Each Corp or Sqn will be allowed up to 2 cadets per team (any rank) (each team must have video enabled so they can be seen). The questions will be available on a slide and will also be read by WO Milloy. Once the question has been read you will have 5 seconds to answer. WO Steinmar will notify you when 5 seconds are up and that will signify that no more time will be allocated to you. If you start to answer when WO Steinmar calls time we will allow you to respond with an answer. The order in which the Corps and Sqns questions will be asked will be based on how the Zone Training Officer submits the spreadsheet to us. Note: If a Corp or Sqn misses their day for their zone, they will not be allowed to participate in another zones day and forfeit the competition.

*Any Corp or Sqn member from their respective zone will be allowed to dial in and listen to the trivia challenge for moral support. Please note that if any person other than the participant speaks or answers any question during the challenge, they will be disconnected from the web x/teleconference. In addition the Corps or Sqn who’s question it was will get a 0 for an incorrect answer.*

Date/Time: Zone 4 – Wed 10 June at 19:00. The finale between the winners of each zone will be on the Mon 15 June at 1900.
